Commonly referred to as the 'Stealth Fighter', the F-117A is a precision attack aircraft designed to be near-undectable to radar. Constructed primarily of aluminium, the F-117's fuselage is covered with numerous flat panels mounted on the aircraft subframe. The panels bounce radar energy away from the direction of the transmitter, denying a reliable return signal.
Surfaces on the Nighthawk are covered with radar absorbing material, while all doors and panels have serrated edges to further decrease the chance of radar detection. Grid covers on the intakes and narrow slotted exhausts, all surrounded with heat absorbing tiles, further reduce chances of infrared detection.
